I work as a social psychologist and started using gentoo in 2006. I started with GNU/Linux on 2005 and Mandriva was my first distribution. While it was nice while it worked, I was lost when something went wrong. After being helpless in front of a text login screen, I just moved to gentoo. Despite not having any training or education in computer science, following the gentoo handbook without clearly understanding what I was doing opened the doors to a bleeding-edge Shangri-la. I also understood that "bleeding-edge" had many different meanings ;-) I am now proud of having a binary host for all my boxes: laptops, desktops and servers. Nowadays, I can easily move to any other distribution. Yes, I have tried Arch Linux: it is a binary gentoo without customization. Instead of using a binary distribution I just have build my own. Gentoo Freedom!

While I continued to use KDE at the beginning, compilation times moved me to explore other desktop and window managers. I spent some time with WindowMaker and FVWM and I learned a lot with them. Played with Enlightenment, IceWM, Fluxbox, Awesome,... Also tried minimalistic window managers like xmonad, wmii, Ratpoison and Ion. I am now in heaven with https://i3wm.org/.
