Talk:KDE
This is a talk page. Please add newer comments below older ones, and sign your comments using four tildes (

).
When adding a new section (at the bottom of the page), please mark it as "open for discussion" by using {{talk|open}}
so it will show up in the list of open discussions."USE flags", "Kernel settings" sections
I don't like these parts of the guide, because the instructions are not complete:
- Missing kernel options (see udev)
- Missing configuration like starting init.d scripts at boot
The text say, that you should follow the linked articles, but then the USE flag and kernel instructions are redundant.
Also the instructions have to be maintained, which is a duplication of work.
So I purpose to just link the articles and remove the instructions in this guide, e.g.:
- Services
Before you install KDE SC it is recommended that you set up several services. Part of that is done automatically if you use a desktop/kde or desktop profile. In detail you should use:
- ConsoleKit: Enables the consolekit framework for defining and tracking users, login sessions and seats.
- D-Bus: Enables use of the dbus message bus system.
- polkit: Enables the polkit framework for controlling privileges for system-wide services.
- udev: Enables support for udev Linux dynamic and persistent device naming.
- udisks: Enables support for some storage related services.
Follow the links for information how to set up these services. Note that other USE flag combinations than set in this profile may technically be possible (especially if you do not run a full KDE DE but only selected applications), but may be unsupported, untested, or lead to unexpected loss of functionality.

KDE Frameworks, Plasma, and Applications 5: Available Versions
I would like to recommend to remove the table with version numbers of KDE Framework and Plasma 5 releases and which versions are in the tree or in overlays. Those numbers change regularly and by the looks of the current table, it doesn't get updated as often. -- Tfischer (talk) 17:28, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
- To the contrary, looks like they are maintained to me. --Maffblaster (talk) 23:02, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
KDE/Plasma 5 upgrade: Overlay (optional)
I think this has no place in the upgrade guide. If anywhere, it should be on main KDE page, maybe below '4. More KDE Software'. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by ASturm (talk • contribs) 12 March 2016
nls use flag
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE#Localization nls use flag enabled by default via system profile
portage/profiles/default/linux/make.defaults # Default starting set of USE flags for all default/linux profiles. USE="berkdb crypt ipv6 ncurses nls pam readline ssl tcpd zlib"
why we enable it for kde applications again? --Cronolio (talk) 08:01, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
- Good question. the previous version, by that standard, just made people re-install the already present l10n packages. So basically, that section could be simplified by noting that by default, USE=nls is expected - und used by the listed meta packages. So that people are aware in what case they need to manually install which *-l10n packages. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by ASturm (talk • contribs) 25 August 2016
Translation problem with translation tool on this page
Some changes have been recently made on this page. Usually when I go to the translation (doing fr one) page I can see which new section need translation or new ones. But today the new section added about SSH/GPG doesn't show up at all for translation. Unless I missed one I don't think it's a missing translation tag. Any idea? advices? Answering to myself... Modifications need to be approved. Then translation tool picks-up. so no problem here . Maybe this page as a mature one should be set to be auto-approved for translation? --Jms (talk) 22:40, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
